Four New Minecraft Server Types: BoxPvP, Gens, Semi-Vanilla and RPG
We have recently added four new server types to Minecraft-MP: BoxPvP, Gens, Semi-Vanilla and RPG.
These new categories make it easier for players to browse servers based on the experience they actually offer. They also give server owners a more accurate way to describe their communities, especially when an older or broader tag does not fully represent the gameplay.
Here is what each of these new Minecraft server types is about.
What are BoxPvP servers?
BoxPvP servers concentrate most of the action inside a compact arena or enclosed map. Players usually mine or collect resources, improve their equipment and fight other players while progressing through increasingly powerful gear and areas.
Many BoxPvP servers add custom enchantments, economies, ranks, quests, unlockable zones and competitive leaderboards. Unlike traditional survival, the gameplay does not depend on exploring a huge open world. The appeal comes from fast access to combat and the constant cycle of gathering resources, upgrading equipment and challenging stronger opponents.
What are Gens servers?
Gens is short for generators. These servers use special blocks or systems that produce items and resources over time. Players collect what their generators create, sell the output for in-game currency and reinvest their earnings into stronger generators, useful upgrades, automation and larger setups.
The gameplay has a tycoon-style feel, with the main objective being to build an increasingly efficient and profitable base. Depending on the server, Gens may also be combined with plots, islands, PvP, Skyblock, Prison, quests, prestige systems or competitive leaderboards.
What are Semi-Vanilla servers?
Semi-Vanilla servers preserve the familiar Minecraft survival experience while adding a limited selection of features for convenience, security or community play.
These additions may include land claims, homes, teleport commands, player shops, an economy, grief protection, moderation tools or community events. The exact features vary from one server to another, but the core world, crafting, exploration and progression should still feel close to regular Minecraft.
The Semi-Vanilla tag is therefore a good fit for servers that offer more structure than pure Vanilla without transforming the game into a heavily customized mode.
What are RPG servers?
RPG servers expand Minecraft with role-playing game mechanics such as quests, classes, skills, levels, custom equipment, dungeons, bosses, storylines and long-term character progression.
Some RPG servers are set in medieval fantasy worlds, while others combine RPG mechanics with survival, factions, magic, technology or custom maps. The objective is generally to develop your character, complete increasingly difficult challenges and continue exploring a world filled with goals and rewards.
RPG and Roleplay are related, but they are not exactly the same. Roleplay mainly focuses on players acting as characters and creating stories together, while RPG describes the gameplay systems behind character development and adventure. A server that offers both experiences can use both types.
Server owners: update your listing
Does your server offer BoxPvP, Gens, Semi-Vanilla or RPG gameplay? Please log in to Minecraft-MP and update your server listing to select the new types that apply.
You can combine these tags with existing server types when appropriate. A server might be Semi-Vanilla and SMP, RPG and Survival, or Gens and PvP. However, please select only the types that represent a meaningful part of your server’s gameplay.
Keeping your types accurate helps your server appear on the correct category pages and gives players a clearer idea of what to expect before joining. This is particularly important for servers that were already listed before these new options became available.
